Why Kharif sets the tone for the whole maize year

Roughly 60% of India's maize arrives from the Kharif harvest, flowing into mandis from late September through December. Whatever Kharif delivers — in tonnes, in quality, in timing — decides how tight Rabi becomes, how early feed mills panic-buy, and whether the ethanol programme leans harder on FCI rice or imported alternatives. The acreage signal: what sowing data is really saying

Maize acreage has been expanding as farmers respond to firm prices and assured offtake from ethanol distilleries. But acreage headlines hide the mix: how much is going into high-starch hybrids preferred by distilleries and starch plants, versus conventional feed-grade grain. The premium between the two is becoming a market of its own — and 2026 sowing choices will show up as a quality spread at harvest.

Three demand engines meet one harvest

Ethanol distilleries now absorb around 12.5 million tonnes and buy year-round, smoothing what used to be a harvest-time price crash. Feed remains the largest user at ~54% of the crop, with poultry compounding. Starch plants pull ~7 million tonnes and cannot switch raw material. When all three bid into the same arrival window, the old seasonal playbook — buy the harvest dip, sell the lean months — compresses. The dip is shallower and shorter every year.

The import-parity ceiling

With India now a structural net importer in deficit years, landed cost of eligible non-GM origin grain acts as the ceiling on domestic rallies. Traders should track FOB offers from South America and the Black Sea, freight, duty and the non-GM certification premium as one number — because when domestic prices approach it, import enquiries start and the rally stalls.

What to watch between now and harvest

Monsoon spread across Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Bihar; distillery procurement announcements; poultry placement data as a proxy for feed demand; and any move on ethanol blending targets beyond E20.
